JSW Steel USA, Ohio

A Premier Producer of Hot Rolled Coiled Bands of Steel

JSW Steel USA - Ohio Facility made a humble beginning in June, 2018 by acquiring the Melt shop and Rolling mill of the former Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel plant at Mingo Junction, Ohio which has a long operating history dating back to 1872. The plant currently has a modernized facility with an EAF, LMF, Slab Caster and 80” Hot Rolling Mill.

The JSW management team took on the daunting task of restarting the complex within the shortest possible time after it sat idled for 10 years.

The Hot Strip Mill was restarted in July of 2018 under JSW management, and rolled purchased slabs to begin offering hot roll product into the market. The EAF/Slab caster was started up in December of 2018 and thus began to offer melted and manufactured in the USA to it’s customer base.

Our Customers

JSW Steel Ohio Plant serves the domestic North American consumers where the demand for hot rolled bands is expected to grow to 28 million tons while about 3.8 million tons of capacity has been removed from the market.

The mill lies in the heart of Marcellus and Utica gas regions along the Ohio river and is serviced by two railroads, the Norfolk Southern and Wheeling Lake Erie. There are three major highway access to this property which are Ohio Route 7, Federal Route 22 and Interstate 70 which link to all other major highways. It also has barge handling facility with 150 acres of water front property on the at Ohio river which puts it in a strong position to serve markets with barge access.

JSW Steel is supplying hot rolled bands to coil processors, cold rolled strip producers, pipe and tubers, original equipment manufacturers and steel service centers. Our strategic location gives us excellent access to our customers, as well as convenient access to high quality raw material.

Our Assets

JSW Steel Ohio Plant has unique capability to produce 72” wide Hot Rolled coils in this region. The plant comprises of:

  • 3.0MM tons per annum (MTPA) continuous hot strip mill (80” wide) and roll shop

  • 1.5 MTPA capacity EAF (157 MVA Electric Arc Furnace) with 400 ton EAF furnace with tapping capacity of 250 ton heat size.

  • Ladle Metallurgy Furnace (LMF) which includes a Twin station swing roof 35 MVA

  • 2.80 MTPA, 1 x 2 strand slab continuous casting machine

  • 80" HSM Equipped with automatic roll changers, roll bending, and hydraulic automatic gauge control. Additional improvements planned as part of the initial start-up investment.

  • 1.2 MCFM bag house for waste gas cleaning
